We had a visit today from Actias luna, commonly known as the Luna Moth — one of the largest moths in the North America with a wingspan of up to 4 1/2 inches. While not particularly rare, these lime green creatures are rarely seen, partly because they're more common at night, and partly because of their very brief adult lives. Believe it or not, they do not eat or have mouths, they emerge as adults solely to mate, and as such, only live approximately one week. This one settled on to one of our reclaimed Doug fir timbers supporting our front porch, we're not sure whether it was a new adult pumping up its wings, or perhaps laying eggs.
