Good home design includes responding to the site's solar conditions. While solar panels actively capture the sun’s energy for use in the home, the home itself can function as a passive solar collector. The long side of the house oriented toward south, intelligently placed glazing (windows), and large southern overhangs all contribute to this sun-sensitive design, which will mitigate solar heat gain in hot months and capitalize on it in cold months.
